Electric FAQ's

Power for Independence!

The foundation of Independence Light & Power, Telecommunications is our electrical service. We are proud to be the supplier of power to the Independence area, and we are continually seeking new ways to improve and update our service to you. Independence Light & Power, Telecommunications has been delivering reliable, low cost power since 1893. Our mission is to deliver world class service for the lowest possible cost.

Independence Light & Power, Telecommunications uses a combination of power generation and cooperative agreements with other municipal utilities to ensure that you continually receive the power you need to run your businesses and keep your homes comfortable and safe. We also maintain backup generators to power the entire city in case of outages. When other communities or surrounding rural electric systems are without lights due to storms or other potential disasters, Independence will continue to operate with backup power.

Admin / Office

The office team at Independence Light and Power consists of 4 people and an office manager. The office is responsible for customer service, billing and all of the accounting. In addition to billing for our services of electric, cable, Internet and telephone, we bill for water, sewer and garbage for the city.

Plant Operations

We have done numerous upgrades to our facility and equipment over the years to increase reliability and efficiency. We have added a state of the art SCADA system which uses our local fiber to connect the main plant to the west substation. This system also communicates with switches and power control equipment in the distribution system. We are able to control these switches from the plant which allows for shorter outage time.

The SCADA system also gathers information about the distribution system that we use to make sure we are delivering you good quality electricity. It also aids in restoring power using our generators during a total power outage.

We will continue to stay abreast with your needs and with technological changes that will improve quality and reliability.

Electric Distribution

At Independence Light and Power, Telecommunications, our Electric Distribution team consists of 4 Linemen and a Line Superintendent. Our crews maintain and install all of the electrical lines and equipment in our service territory. Together they have over 52 years of service to our community.

To report problems or concerns you may have with electric lines or street lights in your area please send a detailed E-Mail to Kevin or call 319-332-0100
